Additional Information This aquarium is basically an Asian blackwater biotope. The main goal of creating such an aquarium is to imitate the flooded swamps in Chachoengsao province west of Bangkok at the very beginning of the rainy season. This tank is the home of the main fish of the aquarium, the Betta siamorientalis. At the beginning of the rainy season, Betta fishes target those areas for breeding that are flooded with dense vegetation in order to be protected from predators. This is also the main reason for keeping Boraras maculatus & uropthalmoides in the aquarium. Direct sunlight is imitated by a DIY LED lamp, which is controlled by a tc420 device and imitating the properties of sunlight e.g. luminous intensity. Approximately 40 litres of leaves (the quantity of catappa is the utmost, but walnut & birch-wood leaves are added too) and 2-3 litres of black peat can be found in the water. Water is tinted by alder tree-cone. The water is super soft (GH between 2-3, KH 0). This value is achieved and kept in the favourable pH range (pH 5.5 - 6.0) by rain-water. And this results in a pretty acid pH. The thickness of the layer of leaves is approx 8-10 cm. Interoperability of the leaves' layer is ensured by plenty of Helena slugs. Helenas are also good at eating of residual fish food.
Plants: Nymphaea lotus Zenkeri red feels comfortable here and under of its huge emers leaves Bettas and their juveniles can hide and feel safe. As a floating plant, Lemna minor can be found on the surface of the water. Based on my personal experience, when it comes to the appearance and habits the most compatible plant for the tank is the Eleocharis palustris. In addition, the viewing experience is spiced up by Microsorium pteropus.
