The very good hardscape job unfortunately must have been hidden by the plants. It is clear that there was an attempt to innovate but because of the parallel and symmetric lines created with the hardscape the notion of perspective and sense of depth were gone. This happened because when the strength lines touch themselves it becomes evident that they are on the same plane and therefore the sense of depth is lost.
Maybe the choice and positioning of the red plants could be improved. The foreground was well done with high level of detail creating a nice atmosphere opening space for the development of the rest of the layout.
It was a good decision to choose the black background to be the main photo. The white background was more natural and light but in this case the black background give more power and personality increasing the hardscape strength.
